we're gonna like Ghana!

Dear Family,
All is going well here. We have almost unpacked everything, but are still finding new treasures of decor, contact lists, treatment protocols, etc. left by the Merrills. Our first Sunday(yesterday): We rode out to a remote branch - Kpong Branch, located near the dam forming Lake Volta which is advertised here as the "largest manmade lake(hence reservoir) in the world. It was about an hour and a half drive through the bush. Lots of poverty, but the people seem happy. The branch was funtioning very well. The branch president is a Ghanaian who is an MD and a PhD in public health, who worked in St. Louis for about 20 years after he left here because the president of the country then had him on a hit list. He has now come back to help his country. His specialty is what this country needs the most - public health. We had a good visit over lunch after the meetings were over.
I will try to post a few photos taken on the trip. The kids that live next to the Church in their yard. A soccer game with a typical couple of women with big stuff on their heads. Some of the Kpong Branch primary kids. Also included is a shot of the bat trees. The dark clumps hanging from the branches are about 10-15 fruit bats( they apparently eat fruits not insects) hanging together. Hope all is well there. It is here.
Love, Dad/Grandpa

Oh Mercy! Ghana looks glorious! That first pic looks like something from the Sally Struthers commercials or National Geographic. Congratulations on your first successful blog. I wish I would've had one of these on my mission. MUCH hipper than faxing.
I'm playing hooky this afternoon and "working" from home. Working. HA. Working is for suckers.
Have you got a handle on what the "typical" (if there is such a thing over there) day will be like yet?
Since apparently none of your other children love you enough to remain diligent in checking and commenting on the blog, I will post ANOTHER comment on this thread.
I'm back at work again. Blegh. As we can't do much for Burk's birthday while he is in Detox...maybe we'll have a dinner in his honor before he goes to jail. Happy 34th! No other updates on him from my end for the time being.
The weather here is depressing. I'd trade it for a blinding, eternal sandstorm with an ominous name any time.
Dad, loved the pictures. That is exactly how I pictured it--shirtless little kids in the bush. I'm very excited to come over.
Shane apparently feels we need to comment on every post. . .so, I'm commenting even though I sent you a personal e-mail about the pics. Keep 'em coming dad. You know my rule. . .You can NEVER take enough pictures. I'll be taking plenty of the family while you're gone. In fact, Shane called me the other day to see if I could come over and do his own personal photo shoot for him. Not sure what that was all about. That's just the way he rolls I guess. :)
Damn right. Lindsay and I have had said photo session she referred to...and she took, oh I'd say about...250, maybe 300 pictures of me acting out pivotal U.S. military battles, in the nude.
I'm just waiting for her to post them...
Her personal fave was "Battle of the Bulge".
...blame her, she brought it up.
